Importance of MOOCs

importance of moocs

The importance of MOOCs (Massive Open Online Courses) in the realm of education, particularly in higher education, has become a prominent subject of discussion. While MOOCs offer opportunities for some students and educators, they also present challenges related to course quality, consistency, and delivery.

The All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) has implemented this Curriculum for the Bachelor of Technology (B.Tech) program, consisting of 160 credits over four years. Additionally, students pursuing a Bachelor of Technology with Honours degree will need to earn an extra 20 credits through Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) from various online platforms.

This requirement for an extra 20 credits through MOOCs is in accordance with AICTE guidelines. Students enrolled in the B.Tech program must successfully complete these additional online courses within the span of four years. It’s worth noting that 16 credit points are applicable to three-year undergraduate programs as well.

This initiative offers an excellent opportunity for students to enhance their skill sets for better employability. They can do so by taking advantage of MOOCs, which provide access to the expertise of renowned academics and industry professionals from around the world.

GUIDELINES FOR MOOCs

Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) have been integrated into university curriculum and academic activities through various means, including:

  1. Offering MOOCs as part of the curriculum for undergraduate Honours degree programs.
  2. Requiring research scholars pursuing Ph.D. degrees to complete mandatory coursework through MOOCs.
  3. Utilizing MOOCs for credit transfer, recognizing them as equivalents to traditional theory courses in the curriculum, as per the recommendations of the Board of Studies (BoS).
  4. Implementing MOOCs to fulfill Mandatory Additional Requirements (MAR) as part of academic requirements.

Are assignments or exams typically required in a MOOC?

In the majority of MOOCs, formal exams are not a typical requirement. Instead, MOOCs incorporate various learning activities aimed at helping students develop their skills and knowledge. Students are expected to demonstrate their acquired skills through these activities.

While there may be occasional suggestions for small assignments throughout the course, they are often not mandatory. These assignments are primarily designed to aid students in honing their abilities and gaining a deeper comprehension of the course material.

MOOCs for different Courses

B.tech honours degree

mooc points

A student of first year has to cover courses from at least three skills:

  1. Computer Programing with Python /R
  2. Softskill
  3. Ethics

In the first year, students from all disciplines will be provided with programming skills in a globally sought-after language.

This foundational skill will enable them to apply programming concepts throughout their subsequent semesters, including within their specific areas of study.
Soft skills is a crucial aspect of a student’s development, and it should be introduced right at the outset of the four-year program.

Ethics, too, is a practice that should be instilled early in the program. Students should receive initial awareness of ethical principles so that they can apply relevant ethical norms within the institutional environment and society. This early exposure will prepare them to practice ethics not only during their academic journey but also throughout their professional careers.

All MOOC courses will be accessible through any MOOC platform, following a credit-point system. The idea of a fixed course basket will no longer apply. However, when selecting courses on the online platform, students should prioritize courses that are not already included in the traditional offline classroom curriculum.

For the NPTEL/Swayam platform, credit points will align with the platform’s specifications.

For other MOOCs platforms such as Coursera, edX, Udemy, Simplilearn, etc., credit points will be assigned as follows:

  • Courses spanning 4 weeks to 7 weeks: 1 credit point
  • Courses lasting 8 weeks to 11 weeks: 2 credit points
  • Courses extending from 12 weeks to 15 weeks: 3 credit points
  • Courses with a duration of 16 weeks or longer: 4 credit points

B. Pharm Program

To earn a B.Pharm Honours degree, students are required to attain an additional 8 credits, in addition to the credits stipulated in the B.Pharm degree curriculum. These supplementary credits must be acquired through MOOCs platforms over the four-year duration of the program.

UG Architecture Degree

To earn a B. Arch Honours degree, students are expected to acquire an additional 8 credits beyond the requirements of the standard B. Arch curriculum. These additional credits should be obtained from MOOCs platforms throughout the entire five-year duration of the program.

Non-AICTE UG Programs (Non CBCS curriculums)

In the case of Non-AICTE programs, students are mandated to accumulate an extra 16 credits from MOOCs in addition to the 120 credits required for their undergraduate (UG) degree.

The 16 credits needed to qualify for an Honours degree are spread out over the course of four years in the following manner:

1st year: 4-8 credits 2ndyear: 4-8 credits 3rdyear: 4 credits

As previously mentioned, students are required to complete specific courses during their first year:

Students are expected to enroll in MOOCs related to R or Python programming languages, as well as MOOCs focusing on soft skills and ethics, for the reasons previously outlined.

The credit calculation scheme will remain consistent with the previously mentioned criteria for various MOOCs platforms.
